I would start from the fact that most of the food on our tables is either filled with preservative chemicals and crazy amounts of sugar or the growth of the farm produce was hastened by excessive amounts of chemical fertilizers but you probably know all of this already. Most of us hardly eat any fresh foods these days.
Nonetheless there are a number of clean and healthy farm produce in Ghana that are not given as much credit as they deserve. They keep our meals sane and refreshing but that refreshing feel and sanity is only understood by the people who have access to them as well as those who know the difference between healthy farm produce and farm produce infested with fertilizers and other preservative chemicals.
I wouldn’t say I know all these amazing farmers but the few I’ve met seem passionate about adding freshness and health to the food on our table. I believe that these farmers need to be heralded and that’s one of the reasons the Accra Green Market exists.
Accra Green Market is a gathering of green initiatives in food, lifestyle, eco-friendly products & services, clean technology, recycling, fashion, and eco buildings aimed at showcasing workable solutions for individuals and businesses to be healthy and sustainable. Accra Green Market started in September 2013 as Ghana’s first 100% Local and Organic farmers market making locally grown produce available to consumers and has since then evolved into a revolution of green spaces bringing together companies and innovative brands, large and small businesses in one place to promote the best in sustainability and green living.
Our goal is to promote locally made produce and provide guaranteed markets to boost local production. Your presence will go a long way in making this possible.
There are an increasing number of activities you can join in at each green market. This month we start a series of urban gardening classes for anyone looking to start their own farm (commercial or small scale/backyard); right from the basics of choosing the crop down to maintenance and harvesting. Facilitating our first session is Mr. Joseph Sarpong, Headmaster of Adidome Farm Institute and Deputy Director of Agriculture. Mr. Sarpong has 30 years experience in Ghana’s agricultural sector, with special focus on Agricultural Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ATVET). You can sign up for this class here
The market this month will be at iSpace, Labone on the 28th of January 2017 from 9am to 4pm.Save the date and be sure to pass through.
