Dr. Sulley Ali Gabass
An Accra Gender-Based Violence Circuit Court yesterday heard the evidence of the 16-year-old
senior high school student who is alleged to have been sodomised by Dr. Sulley Ali Gabass, the senior medical officer at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi.
The court, presided over by Mrs. Rita Agyemang Budu, heard among others things how the victim and the suspect became friends on facebook, a social media platform, to the time the victim was allegedly sodomised by the accused.
Though the matter was for the third time heard in camera because of the need to protect the identity of the victim, snippets of information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicated that he had completed testifying.
According to the paper's deep-throat source, the defence counsel also began his cross- examination of the victim in the camera hearing that lasted over three hours.
It further stated that the cross-examination continues today, adding that today's trial would determine what happens in the subsequent days.
Mrs. Rita Agyemang Budu had on Tuesday ordered DSP Aiden Dery, the prosecutor in the case, to produce the victim in court when he (prosecutor) had told the court that he (victim) was not in court because of his condition.
This compelled the judge to emphatically state that the court was ready to move to wherever the victim could be found in order to take his evidence.
She accordingly asked the registrar of the court to put things in order to enable the court move to the shelter where the victim is based for his evidence as well as that of the complainant to be taken.
Francis Sosu of the Human Rights Advocacy Centre held brief for the victim and the complainant.
Nii Kwei Amasah, counsel for Dr. Gabass, said he was happy the court was going to start the trial expeditiously.
The court has again remanded the suspect into prison custody.
Dr. Ali Gabass is standing trial over a two-count charge of defiling a child under 16 years and unnatural carnal knowledge – an offence he has denied.
He is said to have in the months of October 2013 and April 2014 at Kasoa and Alajo in Central and the Greater Accra Regions respectively, had unnatural carnal knowledge of the victim, aged 15.
At the initial stages of the trial, the police prosecutor said during the month of September 2013, the victim met the suspect on Facebook and became friends, chatted online and communicated on phone for a while.
According to the prosecution, during the month of October 2013, Dr. Gabass arranged and met the victim at the Kasoa New Market area where he forcibly had anal sex with the victim in his car in front of the Kasoa HFC Bank.
During police interrogation, Dr Gabass admitted knowing the victim as a friend, but denied having anal sex with him.
