I Didn’t Know It Was Cocaine…I Thought It Was Gold – Nayele

Nayele Amatefe
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Hannah Tetteh has disclosed that Nayele Amatefe, the lady at the centre of the now famous cocaine saga in the country claims she did not know there was 12.5k of cocaine in her hand luggage.

Nayele Ametefeh who traveled from the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra was arrested at the Heathrow Airport in the UK on the 10th of November.

She is currently being held by the British authorities and scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, November 27th.

Reports say replay of the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) recordings at the KIA indicated that Ruby Adu-Gyamfi used the VVIP wing together with two other colleagues for the trip, and this was facilitated by some top state officials.

Communications Minister, Dr Edward Omane-Boamah, on Saturday, stated on Radio Gold's news analysis programme, Alhaji & Alhaji, that three people who allegedly aided Nayele Ametefeh had been arrested to help unravel the mystery of how the drug baroness used the VVIP for drug trade leading to her arrest in London.

They include a senior official with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nii Ashietey Armah, who is in charge of the VVIP section, and two other officers, Ahmed Abubakar and Theophilus Kissi, who were picked up for questioning.

A careful review of the CCTV images showed that two other ladies who also allegedly had 5kgs each of the cocaine passed through the VVIP section in the company of Nayele Ametefeh to board the BA078 flight to Heathrow.

Emerging reports indicate that Nayele Ametefeh also uses many names on different travelling documents. Apart from Nayele Ametefeh, she is reported to be using Angel, Ruby Adu-Gyamfi and now Irene Tawiah among others.

According to reports, Ruby's luggage was brought to her safely into the first class section of the particular British Airways flight using her connections in the Ghanaian establishment.

Sources close to the operation that nailed her say that Ruby was spotted by other first class passengers trying to fit 2kg of her consignment into her hand bag after it became difficult for the 12.5kg drug to enter the luggage compartment of the plane.

These passengers alerted the crew members who in turn informed ground staff at Heathrow who informed the Border Security, leading to her arrest.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Gold on Tuesday, Hannah Tetteh said per information available to her gathered from Ghana's High Commission in UK, Nayele through interrogation stated that she didn't know the one who brought her the bag on the plane, adding when she received the bag she thought it was gold.

'She indicated that when she got to the VIP lounge she didn't carry any bag, but when she got to the plane somebody brought a bag to her. She didn't know who the person was but the person knew her name and the seat on which she was. However, she received the bag…she said as far as she was concerned, she didn't know that what she was holding was cocaine…she thought it was gold. Whether that is true or not that is not the point I am raising. I am not here to judge and she wasn't ready to give any more information,' Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister said.
